Well Travelled Hotel – Das Hotel zu Gast!

Well Travelled Hotel – The hotel as guest

Hotel Everland is a mobile hotel capable of touring and taking up new locations in different rooftop situations in different cities. It was originally created for the Yverdon Expo in Switzerland, where it sat on a jetty looking across the Neuenburger lake, but has now started a city tour testing different urban environments. It currently resides on the roof of the GfzK (Gallery for Contemporary Art) in Leipzig where it affords distinctively novel views of the city. The open room plan of the pod-like module encompasses a lounge with picture window that frames the city context, focusing the view for the inhabitants like a periscope.

Everland is to be read as a metaphor reflecting the situation of the guest or stranger. It appears welcoming, because it is accessible to the general public for a few hours every day, as well as being an exclusive, isolated space for the lucky few who managed to reserve a room. There are also irrational aspects: a one-room hotel doesn't make financial sense, the operating costs and the revenues are blatantly disproportionate and the desire for exclusivity contradicts the fact that the hotel is also an art exhibit in a gallery with public access.

It is a form of social sculpture: As a private enclave it underlines the very public nature of urban space and repeatedly challenges visitors and hotel guests to renegotiate the border between private and public interests in ever changing urban situations.
